What is a Vehicle Identification Number or VIN?
A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is composed of 17 characters assigned by the manufacturer when a vehicle is built. Since 1981, every car built for sale in the United States and Canada is required to have a VIN.

Very similar to a fingerprint, the VIN uniquely identifies a specific vehicle to the insurance industry, law enforcement, government, consumers and concerned stakeholders.

Why should I care about my VIN?
An accurate VIN can:
  • Assit consumers in buying a used vehicle. If you know how to check your vehicle's VIN, you'll be less likely to buy a stolen or a vehicle that has been deemed irreparable or unsafe for use.
  • Help ensure a hassle-free transaction when you register your vehicle, renew your license plate permit or transfer ownership. An accurate VIN helps confirm the identity, ownership and insurance of your vehicle.
  • Help law enforcement identify and recover stolen vehicles.
  • Make it easier for vehicle body and maintenance shops to order appropriate parts for your vehicle(e.g. identify model series, engine and drivetrain).
  • Help your insurance company identify your vehicle to ensure that your insurance is properly rated and confirm ownership in the event of claims.
  • Protect your vehicle's identity. Unlike a fingeprint, duplicate vehicle identities can be created, making it easier to sell stolen vehicles.
  • Allow fee-based commercial services, such as CarFax, check the records on a vehicle in the MVR database. These records will show you how many owners the car has had, when it was last inspected, if it was ever classified as a "lemon", if it is a stolen car, or if it has ever gone through a major incident such as rolling over or being sumerged in water. These records can also reveal if the car's odometer has ever been rolled back, or if it has flipped(reached the maximum miles on the gauge and rolled back over to zero).

How can I check my VIN?
When checking your vehicle, make sure the VIN is identical in each place it appears:
  • Compare the VIN plate on the dashboard of your vehicle with the one that is usually found at the bottom of the driver's door post(otherwise refer to your owner's manual).
  • Compare these to the VIN on your ownership permit.
  • Compare all the above to the VIN shown on your pink liability slip(proof of insurance).

Useful tips about the VIN.
  • The letters "I", "O" and "Q" are not used anywhere in the VIN.
  • Position 9 of the VIN can have only the values 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and X. more...
  • The last five positions of the VIN should always be numeric.
  • Be careful when dealing with the following sets of letters and numbers. They look similar:
    S and 5H and 8G and 6Z and 2B and 8D and 0
    U and 4Y and 4M and NU and VF and ST and P and B

How to read Model Year from the VIN?
"Model year" is encoded in the 10th position of the VIN. It should always be a letter for 1981-2000 vehicles, a number for 2001-2009 vehicles and a letter for 2010 and forward. Note that the year code can be the calendar year in which a vehicle is built, or a model or type year allocated by the manufacturer.

What is Production Sequential Number?
The twelfth to seventeenth digits in a VIN number indicate the sequence of the vehicle for production as it rolled off the manufacturers assembly line. These 5 digits should always be numeric.

Where can I find my VIN?
The VIN can be found by looking at the dashboard on the driver side of the vehicle. If the VIN cannot be found, open the driver side door and look at the door post(where the door latches when it is closed). It is likely that the VIN will also be displayed in this location.

What if my VIN is not 17 characters long?
If the VIN is not 17 characters long, please double-check to make sure that you have the right VIN and have copied it down correctly. If the VIN is still less than 17 characters long, the VIN is most likely from a pre-1981 vehicle.

What does Checksum Test do?
Firstly, find the numerical value associated with each letter in the VIN. (I, O and Q are not allowed.) Digits use their own values.

A->1B->2C->3D->4E->5F->6G->7H->8
J->1K->2L->3M->4N->5P->7R->9 
S->2T->3U->4V->5W->6X->7Y->8Z->9

Secondly, look up the weight factor for each position in the VIN except the 9th (the position of the check digit).

1st->82nd->73rd->64th->55th->46th->37th->2  
8th->1010th->911th->812th->713th->614th->515th->416th->317th->2

Thirdly, multiply the numbers and the numerical values of the letters by their assigned weight factor, and sum the resulting products. Divide the sum of the products by 11. The remainder is the calculated check digit. If the remainder is 10, the calculated check digit is the letter X.

Finally, if the calculated check digit did match the 9th digit of the VIN entered by a user, the VIN passed the checksum test. It failed the checksum test otherwise.

What is a VIN decoder?
VIN Decoder, such as VINquery.com, is a database-driven software package which can extract manufacturers information coded into the VIN. A standard VIN decoder can extract such information as : model year, make, model, trim level, body type, engine type, transmission, manufacturer, country of origin, GVWR if coded into VIN by the manufacturer. Some manufacturers do not code all this information into a VIN.

We need to decode more than 400 VINs at a time, say 1000. How to go around the 400 limit?
Break down your file containing 1000 VINs into three smaller files: 400, 400, 200 respectively.
  • Upload one file at a time, validate and verify those VINs in the file and then add those VINs into your cart. Click "Get reports" button to checkout. Repeat the "Upload->Validate->Verify->Add to Cart->Get Reports" steps for the remaining files. At the end, you will get 3 CSV/XML file corresponding to your three files.
  • If you would like decoding/explosion results of all the VINs to be generated in a single CSV/XML file. Again, Upload one file at a time, validate and verify those VINs in the file and then add those VINs into your cart. Do not click "Get Reports" button just yet. Instead, repeat the "Upload->Validate->Verify->Add to Cart" steps for the remaining files. And then click "Get Reports" button to checkout. At the end, you will get a single CSV/XML file containg data for all the VINs from your three separate files.

Why did you choose to implement REST Web Service?
REST(REpresentational State Transfer) web services require little infrastucture support apart from standard HTTP and XML processing technologies, which are now supported by most programming languages and platforms. REST web services are simple and effective because HTTP is the most widely available interface, and it is good enough for our applications. In our case, the simplicity of HTTP outweights the complexity of introducing an additional transport layer.

Not at this time. We may provide SOAP interfaces in the future if there is significant demand. We believe REST has a lower barrier to entry, is easier to use than SOAP, and is entirely sufficient for the services we're offering.

Do we get charged for invalid VINs? We can validate the format of the VIN ahead of time, but not that even correctly formated data will return a valid vehicle...
No, you won't get charged for invalid VINs. Neither will you get charged for correctly formatted VINs unless you get VIN decoding results with success.

Do you accept payments by credit card?
No, we no longer accept credit card payments. However, you're still able to pay by credit card via PayPal. PayPal accepts Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express, eCheck, as well as PayPal funds transfer.

Is my payment safe?
Absolutely. Since we use PayPal as our payment processor, we don't store or see your billing information. All credit card and other billing information is stored with PayPal, which is owned by eBay, a gobally trusted and recognized company. In addition to the safety of the transaction itself, we are PayPal Verified. That means we have provided PayPal with our bank information and other sensitive information.

Simply ignore the error page. Sign in if you've logged out. Under "My Account", you'll see your account has been credited. To prevent this from happening again, next time, be sure to let PayPal redirect your browser back to our site instead of clicking the "Returen to Merchant" button. That button never works properly, at least for our site.

I purchased an extended report using PayPal. When I was asked to return to the merchant it crashed. Please advise how to get my report I paid for.

How long does it take to get a report and how do I get it?

How do I get paid and how often?
Payments are based on net 30 on a montly schedule through PayPal with minimum payout of $50. Once you earn at least $50 for a month, a payment will be sent to you via PayPal. Commission totaling less than payout amount($50) in a month will be carried over to the next month.

You need to enter at least one VIN in order to get your VINquery.com report(s). The VIN(s) will be used to search our database for relevant vehicle information.

What is a cookie?
A cookie is a tiny piece of text asking permission to be placed on your computer's hard drive. If you agree, then your browser adds the text in a small file.

Why are cookies persistent?
